$400M Healthy Food Financing Initiative Proposed in Presidential Budget

Lori Brown – February 9th, 2010

A $400 million investment in fresh food programs for low-income communities has been suggested in the recently released 2011 Presidential budget proposal. The public-private grant and loan program would invest in new and expanded supermarkets, farmers markets and other food stores in "underserved communities," reducing the estimated 23 million Americans (8.5 percent) with limited access to full-service markets. Officially called ... read more

Wow, You Can Recycle That?

Lori Brown – February 8th, 2010

A few weeks ago, Earth911 investigated some of the lesser known recyclables. Sure, they don't receive as much media attention as some of their co-stars like the plastic bottle or the aluminum can, but your massive response to "I Didn't Know That Was Recyclable!" proved that there is an outcry to dispose of those odd items. From paint and batteries ... read more

Amanda Wills – January 25th, 2010

A year into his Presidency, Obama has made it clear that we have a long way to go. While critics say Obama has "overpromised and necessarily underdelivered," others note that the President has had to undertake a "colossal collection of colossal messes." Aside from a highly controversial health care debate and a slow-paced recovery from the housing bust, the ... read more

The EPA says the potential health benefits would be between $13 ... read more

Facebook’s Office Is Cooler Than Yours

Amanda Wills – October 21st, 2009

We've seen some pretty cool reuse construction, but Facebook's new headquarters may take the cake. Designed by San Francisco-based Studio O+A, the office is a former 1960s laboratory. While the designers gave the social media king's new home a kitschy, modern decor, they also preserved some of the original construction, including a bright orange construction crane that was incorporated ... read more
