North American Countries Partner on Energy Technology

The Environmental News Network reports that the United States, Canada and Mexico are partnering on the development of alternative energy by reducing the barriers on sharing ideas between countries. While all three countries have been working individually on issues like renewable fuels and natural resources, this five-year agreement will allow the countries to collaborate without fear of competition.

“The countries agreed in 2001 to promote energy security in the region, but a new pact was needed to provide a ‘formal framework’ to resolving issues such as ownership of intellectual property rights, the officials said.”

The agreement will also attempt to align standards regarding energy for consumer goods, such as computers running in standby mode. The three countries already have an agreement on environmental cooperation, but this partnership has the potential to unite an entire continent in support of the environment.
