Hollywood Pigeons to Be Put on the Pill

Check out this Environmental News Network story about controlling the pigeon population in Hollywood. Representatives from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) suggested putting the birds on a birth control pill called OvoControl P, which will now be placed in the bird feeders on rooftops.

“It’s estimated about 5,000 pigeons call the area home. Their population boom is blamed in part on people feeding the birds, including a woman known as the Bird Lady, who was responsible for dumping 25-pound bags of seed in 29 spots around Hollywood.”

The Los Angeles Times says this measure should shrink the pigeon population in Hollywood by at least 50% by 2012. Earth 911’s sister site, Pets 911, provides additional resources on controlling animal population.
