Taiwan Works on OLED Displays to Recycle Energy
Printed Electronics World profiles the capability of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to power laptop computers and cell phones by utilizing solar power. The OLED screens would include a solar cell that will generate electricity and help recharge batteries.
“This feature is particularly attractive for mobile electronics, which are typically limited by power usage. With such energy recycling, the devices themselves would add a self-powering function as well as achieve higher system-level efficiency. Both attributes could contribute to longer battery lifetimes for mobile electronics.”
The National Taiwan University scientists who have developed this technology have only achieved .26% recycling efficiency so far. Meanwhile, Philips and LG are working on OLED screens powered by oil and water, and other companies are ending the production of OLED displays altogether.
