Mattel Suggests Recalled Toys Returned to Manufacturer

Mattel issued a quick response to Tuesday’s recall of toys for containing lead-based paint. The company is requesting that all toys in question be returned to Mattel’s manufacturing plant.

Despite some concerns about where these toys might eventually end up, Earth 911 encourages Mattel toy owners to follow instructions by the company and return any recalled toys to the manufacturer.

Throwing toys in the garbage presents the opportunity of lead contaminating drinking water, and recycling centers may not be equipped to handle the hazardous waste that these toys potentially contain. The ultimate fear is that these toys be redistributed through a second-hand store and end up back in the hands of children.

Earth 911 would like to commend the efforts of Mattel for acting quickly in the face of such an extreme recall. This is not only an environmental issue, but also an issue of child safety.
