China Says 278 Cities Have No Sewage Treatment

Environmental News Network features another report on the growing environmental issues in China, as city planning officials in Beijing report that half of China’s 1.3 billion population live without a system for treating sewage.

This issue affects 278 cities, eight of which have at least 500,000 people. The problem reaches to much of Asia, but China also has the misfortune of increasing air pollution.

“It has become the world’s top emitter of acid-rain causing sulphur dioxide and many analysts expect it to overtake the United States this year as the biggest greenhouse gas emitter.”

Chinese officials did not submit a reaction to the new report, but this is a problem that companies in China have been trying to address for years. For more information on the ultimate issue at play here, visit Earth 911’s Water Conservation page.
