How Green Was My Burning Man?
The Chico News & Review responds to this year’s Burning Man event questioning whether the supposedly environmentally-friendly event was as green as advertised. The theme of this year’s event was “The Green Man,” which put extra emphasis on the event being pro-environmental in 2007.
“The success or failure of the theme was a topic of constant discussion at the event, and it was widely agreed that ‘The Green Man’ worked as an artistic theme–a launching point or muse–for many of the artists. It was also widely regarded as having failed as a theme for the event itself.”
The article does point out several parts of the event that promoted sustainability, from an archway created from recycled bicycles to camps that used biodiesel to produce power. One of the author’s more solid points is that while Burning Man is a trash-free event, what guarantee is there that items shipped out of the campsite won’t just end up in a landfill in a different town?
