Municipalities Get Big Return From Recycling

PressofAtlanticCity.com profiles the financial benefits of recycling as over 10 townships in New Jersey will be splitting over a half-million dollars in rewards for recycling revenue.

The act of recycling is much more beneficial to a city than disposal through a landfill, as the cost goes from just over $17 per ton to almost $70 for not recycling materials. In this case, Ocean County saved enough through recycling programs in its townships to reward each area for its recycling participation.

“According to John Haas, Ocean County’s recycling coordinator, the county has disbursed revenue checks twice a year since 1995. During that span, the county has returned almost $9 million to its municipalities.”

Ocean County recently beat out 8,000 other government agencies to win an award for its recycling efforts. The county is aiming to comply with New Jersey’s goal of 50% of all products being recycled by municipalities.
