UNEP International Children’s Painting Competition

The International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment is organized annually by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Japan-based Foundation for Global Peace and Environment (FGPE), Bayer and Nikon Corporation. It has been held since 1991 and has received over 190,000 entries from children in over 100 countries. This year’s Competition will focus on Climate Change: actions we can take now to reduce our negative impact.

The children’s paintings can focus on concrete actions such as using renewable energy, introducing energy saving light bulbs at home, sharing vehicles and using public transport, planting trees, etc.

The competition will run from September 24, 2007 to January 15, 2008. The organizers invite children from all over the world to submit their paintings to the UNEP office in their regions.

Entry Rules and Conditions:

The contest is open to children between the age of six and 14 as of World Environment Day (June 5, 2008).

  1. Paintings must be done on letter size (8 1/2″ x 11) or legal size (8 ½ “ x 14) paper.
  2. Full name, age (day, month, year) and full address including phone and e-mail (in English) must be on the back of the painting.
  3. Style of painting is your choice: crayons, colored pencils, watercolors, etc.
  4. Paintings that have been shown or accepted in other competitions will not be accepted.
  5. Paintings that show a particular person, an organization or a brand name will not be accepted.
  6. Do not include any words or descriptions in the paintings.
  7. Only hard copies of paintings will be accepted. (E-mail entries will only be accepted if accompanied by hard copies).

Global Winners Prizes:

First Prize:

One entrant—$2,000 with a fully paid trip for the winner and a chaperone to the main World Environment Day (WED) celebrations in Wellington, New Zealand on June 5, 2008. The winner will also receive a plaque and supplementary prizes.

Second Prize:

Two entrants—$1,000 each and a fully paid trip for winners and chaperones to WED celebrations in Wellington, New Zealand on June 5, 2008. Each winner will also receive a plaque and supplementary prizes.

Third Prize:

Five entrants—A diploma for each winner

Fourth Prize:

10 entrants—A diploma for each winner

Fifth Prize:

45 entrants—A diploma for each winner

Regional winners:

One winner only from each region (Africa; Asia and the Pacific; West Asia; Europe; Latin America and the Caribbean; and North America) will receive $1,000 and an all expense paid trip for the winners and their chaperones to WED celebrations in Wellington, New Zealand on June 5, 2008. Each winner will also receive a plaque and supplementary prizes.

(Note that by entering the competition, you have assigned copyright of your painting(s) to the organizers. The painting(s) will not be returned and will be used to raise environmental awareness through exhibition, websites, posters, publications etc)

Regional winners will be announced on April 22, 2008 and Global winners will be announced on June 5, 2008.
