Phoenix Distributes Reusable Shopping Bags

To encourage the use of reusable shopping bags, the city of Phoenix provided its grocers with 30,000 cloth bags to distribute on Saturday, Nov. 17, at more than 85 stores.

The city of Phoenix has partnered with the Arizona Food Marketing Alliance and area grocery stores to find a solution to the problem of plastic bags, Mayor Phil Gordon announced last Thursday on American Recycles Day. The city created a volunteer program that provides easy disposal of plastic bags, regardless of their origin, and encourages the use of reusable shopping bags.

More than 90 percent of Phoenix grocery stores are participating. The goal is to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic bags.

Phoenix residents consume more than 300 million plastic bags annually. The Phoenix residential recycling program does not accept the bags, but now residents will have easy and plentiful opportunities to recycle bags at prominent displays at the entrances of their local grocery store under the sign “Bag Central Station.” The bags will be recycled into new plastic bags and building material.

Earth 911 has partnered on this effort and currently offers over 100 Phoenix locations to recycle your plastic bags. To find out the nearest plastic bag recycler whatever your area, use the recycling locator search at the top of this page.

Good for Phoenix. We live in southern Arizona. The stores in our small town are starting to have reusable shopping bags and sell a few. More people setting an example by using reusable bags as they shop will help.
