Residents Recycle Christmas Trees to Save Coast
The Shreveport Times features one of the benefits of recycling Christmas trees, as ShrevCORPS has developed programs to turn recycled trees into erosion preventers on the southern coast of the state.
Louisiana loses around 30 square miles of marsh every year due to erosion, with special circumstances like Hurricane Katrina responsible for much more damage. Recycled trees provide a wave break for the marshes and improve water clarity, while also providing a reef environment for the fish and crustaceans in the area.
Additional products from recycled Christmas trees include wood chippings and mulch, which can be used for things like trail restoration. Click here for more information on the benefits of recycling trees.
