Hawaii to Only Provide Refund for Labeled Containers

Starting this Saturday, Hawaii residents seeking the state’s five cent refund for bottle and can recycling must make sure containers are marked with a “HI-5¢.”

Containers without this marking can still be recycled at the state’s redemption centers, but no refunds will be given. Since December 2007, Hawaii has been offering cash back on non-alcohol containers less than two-liters in size regardless of labeling.

All qualified products being currently sold in Hawaii should now have the HI-5¢ label. It covers products made of plastic.
