Nordstrom to Feature Eco-Friendly Shopping Bags and Boxes
Nordstrom will introduce environmentally friendly packaging options for its customers throughout 2008, including:
- 100 percent recyclable paper shopping bags rolled out from April through September. The bags currently have propylene handles that are not recyclable.
- Gift boxes made of 100 percent recycled paper stock that is 30 percent post-consumer waste starting with the holiday season. The silver foil on the current gift boxes will be converted to a matte silver ink.
- Reusable shopping totes big enough to fit two shoe boxes starting March 15 (West Coast stores only initially).
Nordstrom has not yet announced whether it will be providing a take back program to recycle these bags and boxes.

As a Seattle resident (Nordstrom’s hometown), I’m delighted to hear this news from Nordstrom.
Remember though, it’s even better for the environment to carry your own bags. I bring canvas totes to the mall when I’m shopping and they work brilliantly. Saves the energy that would be otherwise put into creating or recycling Nordstrom’s bags.
Still, I applaud Nordstrom’s for taking this step.
