Play It Safe, Prevent Poisonings, Lock Up Pesticides

This week is National Poison Prevention Week, and the EPA is celebrating with a special Green Scene segment on protecting your home from toxic substances.

The interview features Jim Gulliford of the Office of Prevention Pesticides and Toxic Substances. Gulliford discusses how to protect children from toxic substances around the home and how to respond in case of accidental poisoning. Consider:

  • Every 13 seconds, a U.S. poison control center receives a call about an unintentional poisoning
  • More than 50 percent of the two million poisoning incidents each year involve children younger than six years old
  • In 2006, there were more than 77,000 calls made to poison centers about potential exposure to pesticides

EPA is conducting extensive outreach this week to the Hispanic community on this issue, including television interviews on Telemundo, Univision TV/Radio and CNN Radio en Espanol.

In addition to pesticides, many of the products in your house can contain poisonous ingredients such as Earth 911’s recycling locator.
