San Antonio Increases Waste Recycling
New Earth LLC, of San Antonio, Texas, will now recycle another 65,000 tons of the city’s treated waste, reports the San Antonio Business Journal.
New Earth recycles organic waste and mixes it with topsoil. Not only will the contract reduce the amount biosolids ending up in the landfill, but it will also save money. San Antonio Water System (SAWS) will pay New Earth almost 12 dollars per ton to recycle the waste, compared to a cost of almost 17 dollars per ton to dispose of it in the landfill.
SAWS also contracts with another waste recycling company, Garden-Ville. With the two partnerships, the city will be able to recycle up to 90 percent of its biosolid waste (about 135,000 tons per year).
