Florida Supermarket Chain Partners to Compost Food Waste

The Publix grocery chain is looking to increase its recycling rate to 80 percent through a new partnership that will turn the store’s food waste into liquid fertilizer.

Publix stores in Broward County, Fla. will have fruits, vegetables, meat and bakery products collected by Pompano Beach-based Organic Recovery to keep them out of landfills when the products are past their sell-by date. This material will be turned into a liquid soil amendment, harvest-to-harvest (H2H).

In 2007, Publix had a recycling rate of 42 percent, so the company expects the new program could increase store recycling by 30 percent. Organic Recovery hopes to begin serving Publix stores in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties soon.

One way for you to recycle food waste after you’ve left the grocery store is through a organic waste using Earth911.
