Houston to Implement Pilot Program to Boost Recycling Rate

The Houston City Council has approved a pilot program to begin in November that will set aside $1 million annually to fund expansion of the city’s recycling program.

Houston made headlines in July for having the lowest recycling rate of 30 metropolitan cities, recycling only 2.6 percent of its waste. One of the main reasons given for the low rate was that thousands of residents have no access to curbside recycling, which led to a San Francisco group donating money for 276 bins to the city.

Other highlights of the new program include additional items accepted (such as single-stream recycling.

The program will begin in 4,500 homes, and the city expects these efforts to raise the recycling rate to over 30 percent by next year.
