AZ Power Company Pays Consumers to Recycle Appliances
According to the Phoenix Business Journal, Salt River Project (SRP) is now offering an appliance recycling program to its customers. Beyond feeling great about recycling your old refrigerator or freezer, your wallet gets a boost as well: SRP will mail all contributors a $30 check after the appliance is collected.
About 95 percent of the appliance will be recycled. Also, free pick-ups are available.
The goal of the program is to reduce excess energy consumption by inefficient, duplicate appliances. According to Debbie Kimberly, SRP’s manager of energy efficiency and policy analysis, “Thirteen percent of SRP customers have two or more refrigerators and nearly 23 percent of homes have one or more stand-alone freezers, often in a hot garage.” Kimberly also noted that ridding your garage of these appliances could save almost $100 per year in electricity.
At this time, only refrigerators and freezers can be collected, and they also must be in working condition. Only current SRP customers are eligible to participate, and availability is based on a first-come, first-served basis.
