EPA Creates Site to Help with Digital Switch

February 17, 2009 is quickly approaching, also known as the day when broadcast television stations switch their signal to digital only. The U.S. EPA has created a new resource page to help consumers deal with the transition and minimize the environmental impact.

The page includes an overview of which televisions will be affected, how to find a digital converter box and how to find an energy-efficient digital television.

Older sets will typically have a glass tube that can contain six pounds of lead. If landfilled, this lead can leak out of the TV and contaminate drinking water.

For some, the digital switch has already taken place. This was done in part to provide a pilot program and see what needs to be implemented before the entire country goes digital.

If you decide to buy a new digital television before the switch, find out where to recycle televisions near you using Earth911.
