Columbus Supermarket Becomes LEED Gold-Certified
Today, Giant Eagle®, Inc., celebrated the LEED Gold-certification granted to its new Columbus, Ohio, store.
The store features a number of green features, such as:
- Reuse of a majority of construction waste by sending materials (such as steel and drywall) to various companies
- Almost all wood used in the site harvested from sustainable forests
- Reduction in water usage by planting drought-tolerant vegetation
- Designing the building to consume 20 percent less energy than comparable supermarkets
- All electricity produced by green energy sources
- Use of 82 skylights to bring daylight into the store and minimizing electricity usage
“Becoming a LEED Gold-certified supermarket underscores Giant Eagle’s commitment to environmental responsibility,” said Robert Garrity, senior vice president of sustainability for the company. “It is a continuation of our work thus far, and a step toward future initiatives.”
Giant Eagle operates other LEED-certified supermarkets, such as the first LEED-certified supermarket in the world, which opened in 2004. The new facility in Columbus received its certification after an eight month review process.

I enjoy your articles, keep up the good work.
The company I work for Hilmar Development Group, LLC. is also committed to building Green.
We are the first to build LEED certified homes in Chappaqua, NY 10514
However, we first must recycle the main house (an estate that belonged to Rosalind and Martin Rosenthal; founder of Time Warner, Inc.
We have beautiful windows with the old glass panes; really nice that have the long latches with indoor screens. Also old doors, with antique door knobs, etc.
Do you know of company’s that take lumber, dry wall, carpet that can take from construction site to recycle.
We also have commercial stove, Sliding glass refrigerator
Residential stoves, refrigerator, kitchen cabinets
We are looking for a company that will take everything either recycle it or re use it.
