Cincinnati Extends Recycling Challenge

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory is giving his residents an extra month, until December 15, to sign up for the Cincinnati Recycling Challenge and be eligible for a $1,000 community prize for the most recyclers.

The Cincinnati Recycling Challenge was announced on Earth Day as a way of achieving Mallory’s goal of a 50 percent recycling increase in the city by 2011. Cincinnati communities would compete on an individual basis, and with each other, to sign up residents and win money from Rumple Recycling.

The contest was planned to end last Saturday on America Recycles Day, and already four communities have reached their predetermined signup goals to win $250 each.

In all, 22 Cincinnati communities are participating in the Challenge. Prior to the Challenge, Cincinnati’s recycling rate was nine percent, and Mallory’s plan calls for new recycling locations, a recycling program at Cincinnati Bengals games and a new recycling website.
