Black Friday? Try ‘Cyber Monday’

More online retailers are planning on participating in special promotions for online shopping, starting the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Known as “Cyber Monday,” the day is often referred to as the kickoff for the online holiday shopping season. According to a poll by Shopzilla for Shop.org, nearly 84 percent of online retailers will have Cyber Monday promotions, up 12 percent from the previous year.  Of these participating vendors, almost 25 percent will promote free shipping incentives.

Cyber Monday is assumed to have become popular because shoppers who return to their normal routine after the three-day weekend often use their Internet at work to fish out the deals they couldn’t find in stores over the weekend. Last year, U.S. consumers spent over $730 million on Cyber Monday.

The debate between whether online or in-store shopping is more eco-friendly has become increasingly popular, especially considering the current economic climate.  While consumer spending is predicted to be lower than the 2007 holiday shopping season, many buyers are willing to spend more on environmentally friendly products, such as those made with recycled materials or certified Fair Trade.
