Texas Rangers to Feature Recycling Bins During Upcoming Season
Continuing on a recycling program that started in June 2008, the Texas Rangers will feature 100 recycling bins at the team’s Arlington baseball stadium this year to collect aluminum, paper and plastic.
The bins are being provided by AbitibiBowater, and are five foot high replicas of soda bottles. All proceeds from what is collected will be donated to the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation.

The Rangers are also working with AbitibiBowater’s EcoRewards program to complete a waste diversion plan and a recycling audit. This will help the team address areas where it can produce less waste and recycle more.
The team is encouraging recycling outside of the stadium as well, holding a contest for local schools to collect the most paper for recycling. The top five schools win tickets to a 2009 Rangers game, and the school with the largest increase in paper recycling will receive a special assembly featuring a former Rangers player.
Although this is the first time the Rangers have partnered with a recycling company, the team claims that it recycles everything from carpet to cooking oil and uses grass clippings from the playing field to make mulch.
“The key to successful recycling is making it easy for people to participate,” said Ken Carrier, the National Sales Manager for EcoRewards. “This new initiative will help increase the percentage of beverage containers recovered from the ballpark. It will also help communicate to the fans the Texas Rangers’ commitment to the ‘Go Rangers! Go Green!’ recycling program.”
Other baseball teams have provided similar recycling programs to their fans. If your local team doesn’t offer in-stadium recycling, you can use Earth911 or 1-800-CLEANUP to find drop-off recycling locations on your way home.

It’s cool that sports teams are stepping up to help fans recycle at games. Especially as we move into the summer and everyone is drinking bottled beverages, providing ways for all these bottles not to go into landfills is important.
