Longer Lasting Oil Filter Now Available for Foreign Cars

The microGreen oil filter, which extends the time between required oil changes by filtering smaller particles of oil, is now available for Asian and European car brands including Honda, Nissan and Toyota.

SOMS Technologies LLC, which manufactures the microGreen filters, expanded its line due to increased demand from both consumers and fleets. The filters were already available for American brands including Chevrolet, Ford and GM cars.

The microGreen filters offer two filters per canister, which the company says can capture engine oil particles as small as two microns in size. By catching smaller particles, the engine oil stays cleaner for longer, and SOMS Technologies says a car using its filters can go 30,000 miles between oil changes.

“By offering our filter for a broader range of vehicles, we are enabling drivers to make the most of their current vehicle investment while positively impacting the environment,” says Miles Flamenbaum, CEO of SOMS Technologies. “If every vehicle in the U.S. were to convert to the microGreen filter, we could reduce annual motor oil use by 420 million gallons.”

The company claims that microGreen filters use 70 percent less motor oil and 50 percent less filters over the life of a car. This useĀ  is environmentally significant because both oil and oil filters are recyclable. Reduction in oil filter usage is also important:

  • Even a properly drained oil filter can contain a half-cup of used oil
  • Oil filters are also made largely of steel, representing about 160,000 tons of steel used in the U.S. each year

In a recent conversation with an Army mechanic, he told me that the US Army is already extending time between oil changes to over 10,000 miles. He didn’t say what type of filter is used. Many vehilce maintence/ owner’s manuals now call for a 7,000 mle interval, and yet we still see advertisments recommending a 3,000 mile interval.
Unless your driving a pre 1990 vehicle, changing oil at less than a 5,000 mile interval is likely a waste of time and resources.
