.eco Domain Still Up for Grabs

If you haven’t heard about the .eco debate, here’s a quick recap:

Al Gore and a few other celebrities are backing the idea of a .eco domain registration for the Web that would designate green companies and organizations.

Dot Eco LLC, a group run by Hollywood A-listers such as actor Roger Moore and director Davis Guggenheim, is partnering with Gore’s Alliance for Climate and Protection. Together, the groups are looking to submit the .eco to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

While it will be a year before we find out the fate of .eco, some other groups have jumped on board and are now in competition with Gore’s team. Big Room is also fighting for the .eco domain.

If passed, the new domain would be a virtual “green” label for companies. How strict the guidelines will be to tack .eco onto your Web site is still up in the air. Furthermore, none of the companies have yet to address whether or not .eco will make a difference in retrieving information on environmental change.
