The point here is that batteries, both the kind that you toss after one use (single-use batteries) and the kind you can reuse (rechargeables), are an everyday essential in countless applications. Forget Conan and Leno. The biggest news out of California is its passing of the country's strictest green building code, CAL Green.
Even as budgetary concerns plague the state, the building commission gave a unanimous thumbs-up for the code. CAL Green will apply to new homes, hospitals, schools and shopping malls next January.
