Tips on Recycling VCRs
Nearly 2 million tons of e-waste are tossed every year in the U.S. With such a high disposal rate, it is important to recycle these items rather than throw them away in a landfill. Here are some tips on recycling VCRs:
Start At the Beginning
If you are purchasing a new VCR or VCR/DVD combination unit, consider products from companies that have a take-back program for end-of-life (EOL) items. Companies that offer take-back and recycling programs include LG Electronics, Sony and Toshiba. Retailers will sometimes take back your old electronics if you are purchasing a replacement product.
One Person’s Trash…
If you are getting rid of a product that still works, find a new home for it. Check out eBay’s Rethink Initiative for ideas on recycling, donating or selling used electronics. Electronics that are in working condition can also be donated to schools or other organizations in need of the equipment.
Take a Hike
Take your VCR to a recycling center. Make sure the facility accepts e-waste, or more specifically, VCRs. Check to see if there is a fee involved. Use Earth911’s search to find recycling locations near you.
Rethink for Reuse
Use your VCR for as long as possible. Keep your product clean and when broken, repair it rather than simply replacing it. The less products we buy, the less of an issue disposal will be in the future. Consumer Reports’ Electronic Reuse and Recycling Center offers great advice on purchasing long-lasting electronics.
Spread the Word
Increase electronics recycling in your community. Educate others on the benefits of recycling electronics and inform them about recycling. For a greater impact, take the matter to your state legislature. Having laws in place makes recycling e-waste easier and cheaper for all.
