Tips on Recycling and Reusing Glass Ornaments

One of the most popular forms of Christmas tree decor, glass ornaments are staples of traditional tree trimming.

Start From the Source

When looking to purchase glass ornaments, make the extra effort to buy recycled glass ornaments. There are hundreds of varieties, offering a creative twist to this holiday favorite.

DIY

Thinking about making your own ornaments? Save up incandescent lightbulbs throughout the year, and use them to make your own ornaments. Their shapes easily lend themselves to decorating your tree, and they are especially fun for kids to paint.

You can also use the pieces from broken ornaments to adorn holiday-themed decorations around your home. They can decorate picture frames or mirrors, making unique collages of various holiday themes and colors. Just be sure to handle that broken glass safely.

Mr. Fix-it

Just can’t part with that broken ornament, or don’t want to run out to the store to buy a new one? You can easily repair it, if it broke into easily handled pieces.

Saying Goodbye?

If you’re ready to say goodbye to your old glass ornaments, consider donating them to a local charity or Goodwill first. Make sure to package them in a way which they won’t be broken during transport, and let your donation location know that there are fragile items in your container. Even though your old glass E.T. ornament from 1982 may not hold the same magic for you, it might be the delight of another’s tree.

If you want to recycle your ornaments, check with your local recycler to see if they accept painted glass. Another problem that may arise with your ornaments is the decorations that are added to them, such as feathers, glitter, sequins or other plastic items, which could make it non-recyclable.
