Asbestos is a fibrous material commonly used in the past for insulation and fireproofing. Asbestos became prevalent during the 19th century when manufacturers realized its resistance to heat, electricity and chemical damage. It is also a sound absorbent. It is now known that this substance can be highly toxic if inhaled.
