I am having terrible problems with my vegetable plot. It seems to dry so much and so quickly that it cracks badly on the surface. This leads to the under soil being very firm. Watering seems to make the cracking greater on drying, so looking to start creating a compost pile of my own to try using on this plot to help soften up the rest. Do you think this is what I should be doing and what the plot needs to help the soil? Feel free to correct me! What a perfect detailed step by step tutorial thank you.

I'm very excited about composting, but are there any special tips or things to be made aware of if composting in the desert? Temperatures in Arizona can be a little extreme.

This is a great primer for anyone interested in starting up with composting. Take note that worms can often be added to traditional compost piles, especially in the cooler months when the compost doesn't "cook" at as high of a temperature. Worms can help your pile continue to be active all through the winter, and then they will migrate elsewhere as the warmer months heat up the pile again.
