It’s that time again. Snow shoveling time? For some. Super Bowl time? Nope. Valentine’s Day? Closer, but no. It’s bra recycling time!
Twice a year Soma Intimates will host a bra drive for women in need. This time around, they hope to almost double last year’s inaugural drive by collecting 50,000 bras.
“A bra is one of the least donated but most needed items. Donating sounds like a small thing, but it makes a big difference to women who have to make the choice between buying a bra and putting food on the table,” says Laurie Van Brunt, Soma Intimates’ brand president, in a company statement.
Bring in your gently used bras – or purchase one to be donated – at any of the 128 Soma Intimates boutiques nationwide until Valentine’s Day. The used, wearable bras will then be donated to women’s shelters, local charities and breast cancer support groups in each region.
The new bras will be given to Dress for Success, an international nonprofit that helps underprivileged women gain economic independence by providing professional attire as well as career development tools.
The non-wearable bras will be sent to the Bra Recyclers, a textile recycling company that diverts worn bras from ending up in landfills. They suggest that you ensure any bra you want to donate is clean and in good condition, so the clasps and straps need to function, and note special needs bras like post-surgery or maternity bras.
“The bra drive offers an opportunity for women to clean out their drawers at the start of the new year and give back to their local communities at the same time,” Van Brunt says.
