Gracing sidewalks and streets since the 1940s, skateboards have enjoyed peaks and valleys in popularity. Yet one thing has remained steady throughout – skateboards are simple, sustainable transportation. No gas or oil required. Just kick, push and ride.

Bureo, you say?

There has always been a synergy between surfing and skating, and “bureo” means “waves” in native Chilean (Mapuche). Created out of a shared passion for simplicity and sustainability, Bureo Skateboards have truly reimagined synergy and sustainability with the Bureo Minnow Skateboard. You see, the Bureo Minnow Skateboard is made from recycled fishing nets.

The Bureo team was formed by three friends [Ben Kneppers, David Stover and Kevin Ahearn] focused on finding solutions for the growing issue of plastic pollution in our oceans and initiating social change. With lifelong passions for surfing and the environment, the team aims to continue the fight against ocean plastics and inspire others to find solutions through sustainable product design.”

Net Positivia

Each Bureo Minnow is manufactured in Chile through the team’s initiative, Net Positiva, Chile’s first-ever fishnet collection and recycling program. To date, Bureo has recycled over 28,600 square feet of fishing net through this unique program. That is over 22,000 pounds of derelict fishing nets that have been collected and recycled.

An extension of Net Positiva, Bureo has aligned with coastal clean-up and conservation efforts partnering with non-profits and local communities across the US and Chile to support the removal of marine debris from our coasts.

Just as a wave originates from a disturbance of wind along the ocean surface, Bureo is starting with a small change in an ocean of plastic.”

With the Bureo Minnow Skateboard, planet-friendly transportation is looking pretty rad.
