Bag Central Station
The city of Phoenix has partnered with the Arizona Food Marketing Alliance and area grocery stores to create Bag Central Station, a solution to the problem of plastic bags. The city has created a volunteer program that provides easy disposal of plastic bags, regardless of their origin, and encourages the use of reusable shopping bags.
Phoenix residents consume more than 300 million plastic bags annually. The Phoenix residential recycling program does not accept the bags, but now residents will have easy and plentiful opportunities to recycle bags at prominent displays at the entrances of their local grocery store under the sign “Bag Central Station.” The bags will be recycled into new plastic bags and building material.
Through a partnership with Earth911.com, the Earth 911 recycling locator database currently features over 100 Phoenix locations where people can take their plastic bags to be recycled.
