Littering and Illegal Dumping in Georgia
You don’t have to go far to see that Georgia has a litter and illegal dumping problem. Just drive down one of the state’s busier highways and count the areas that are strewn with discarded packaging, scraps from blown-out tires, and lonely old shoes. Or stroll down a back road and look at the old refrigerators and stoves, car batteries, construction materials, and other junk people have just dumped — for others to clean up!
What is illegal dumping?
Illegal dumping is disposal of waste in an unpermitted area. It is also referred to as “open dumping,” “fly dumping,” and “midnight dumping” because materials are often dumped in open areas, from vehicles along roadsides, and late at night. Illegally dumped wastes are primarily nonhazardous materials that are dumped to avoid either disposal fees or the time and effort required for proper disposal.
These materials typically include:
- Abandoned automobiles, auto parts, and scrap tires
- Construction and demolition waste such as drywall, roofing, shingles, lumber, bricks, concrete, and siding
- Appliances or “white goods”
- Furniture
- Yard waste
- Household trash
- Medical waste
What can you do to help?
Although enforcing Georgia’s Litter and Waste Control Law is the responsibility of local state and law enforcement officers, there are a number of ways citizens can help cut down on littering and illegal dumping.
To report illegal dumping in Montgomery County, please contact the Middle Georgia Regional Office at 912-751-6612. You can write to them at 2640 Shurling Drive Macon, GA 31708.

hey there, my name is michael anderson. 912 398 3000. a concrete truck owned by floyd concrete, 912 231 1334, dumped a pile of wet, uncured concrete behind my house in an ally as i stood there telling them not to dump the concrete. i told the contractors not to do it again. they did it again farther down the ally, which is also the driveway to the back of the house and several other garages.
i pitched a fit and threatened to contact the epd. the contractors cleaned up the second pile. i contacted the concrete company, the registered agent, william d carver and asked them to pay the contractors for cleaning up their mess. the registered agent was rude and told me they can dump this excess concrete where ever the contractors tell them to and that there is no designated dumping sites for wet, uncured concrete. which i know better. the washed out powder is alkaline hazardous waste and the rocks are inert waste. the registered agent, for the concrete company stated he was not aware of this or that there are designated dumping sites. i do not believe this. this concrete company has a reputation for dumping concrete. now i have a mess behind the house and the floyd concrete company, llc. acts as if it is not their responsibility to clean up the mess. what can i do. thank you.
