If you flush them THEN they will get into the water system so the trash is the only option. You should mix them with something like cat litter, coffee grounds so nothing will "eat" them. I called our pharmacy CVS and was told to put our outdated medicines in the trash. They are not concerned with the ground water. Any comments??
