Clean tech in China

The Economist reports on the growing issue in China of developing clean technology for a country that has 16 of the world’s top 20 most polluted cities. The reality is that although China is quickly approaching the United States for largest producer of greenhouse gases, it has done much less than the U.S. to combat the problem until now.

“The Chinese government is also introducing environmental targets of its own in areas such as building regulations, appliance efficiency and the energy consumption of big companies. Meeting them will require vast sums to be spent on new technologies, and several schemes involving local and foreign institutions aim to encourage that investment.”

With more and more American companies increasing their presence in China, the country’s carbon emissions have nowhere to go but up unless the government intervenes. Luckily, many of these companies will be used to restrictions already imposed in the United States.
