Climate Change to Dominate APEC Summit

This Environmental News Network story claims that climate change will be the big issue when the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meets in Sydney on September 8-9. The discussion will center around fighting climate change without implementing international pollution emission targets, despite the fact that the A-list of polluting countries will be in attendance.

“The 21-member APEC grouping includes the world’s two largest greenhouse gas emitters — the United States and China, which together will soon generate half of global emissions — as well as Indonesia, which by some estimates is the third largest.”

The concern among participating countries about setting goals is that the largest polluters are also some of the largest economic producers, and they don’t want to halt development. Another issue that will be addressed in energy security, as energy demand is expected to double among members of APEC by 2030.
