Apple to Recycle Old Computers for Free With Apple Purchase

Rush PR News reports that Apple has a new arrangement where anyone purchasing a new computer from an Apple Store or the online Apple Store can recycle an old computer, regardless of manufacturer, for no charge.

Interested parties will receive an email with instructions on how to recycle their old computer. The consumer must then box the computer and take it to a FedEx location along with the printed email for verification.

This announcement follows the news of companies like Staples agreeing to recycle E-waste for a charge. Given that the computers can’t be recycled at an Apple Store, this program isn’t totally free when you start factoring in charges like boxes, printer ink and gas to get to the nearest FedEx. But it should help reduce the complaints of those who don’t feel that recycling should cost money.

Donating to charities is ideal for useable electronics, however you must make sure that any personal or confidential information is destroyed. Identity theft is on the rise and computers are full of good information. Hard drives should be removed and destroyed before donating or turning over to someone that is not in the information destruction business. Deleting information or wiping hard drives does not always completely remove the information. Cell Phones should also have all the phone numbers deleted.
