Western North American Group Works on Carbon Goals

This Environmental News Network story profiles a meeting of the Western Climate Initiative, a group of six U.S. states and two Canadian provinces, which is attempting to set regional carbon emissions goals for 2020 and 2050. The group will meet throughout the weekend and expects to announce these goals by the end of the month.

“The group has been seen as an attempt by the states and provinces to bypass both countries’ federal governments with more aggressive approaches to dealing with the problem of global warming.”

These states/provinces house three of the top 15 “Greenest Cities” worldwide according to Grist.org, so it should come as no surprise that these areas are taking progressive action on carbon emissions. This year’s Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation was already planning to feature carbon emissions as a primary issue. For more information on climate change, visit Earth 911′s Climate Change page.
