Pollution Fear in China for 2008 Olympics

Environmental News Network reports that one of the big discussions as China begins its promotion of the 2008 summer Olympics is the amount of pollution in Beijing. The games begin exactly one year from today, and there is already talk of certain events being moved if the pollution issue isn’t addressed.

“The most intensely scrutinized preparations for any Games in Olympic history has brought forth a barrage of criticism for China this week on issues such as human rights, press freedom, pollution, food safety and Tibet.”

Another option being passed around is to reschedule events if air quality becomes too much of a factor. China’s Air Pollution Index (API) has gotten progressively worse since the system was implemented in 2000, registering a 500 in April 2006.
