Was Green Building the Reason for China Bridge Collapse?

Reuters reports that Chinese media are blaming Monday’s Beijing bridge collapse that killed 41 people on the fact that it was built “in harmony with the environment” instead of using a steel structure.

The bridge was still a work in progress, so in addition to the deaths dozens of construction workers were feared to be trapped in the Tuo River under wreckage. The other construction workers suggest a different reason for the collapse.

“Surviving construction workers said work on the bridge had been rushed and that they had been ordered to take scaffolding down before the bridge was finished.”

Issues like building materials and time frames frequently come into play when designing structures, such as rebuilding the Minnesota bridge that collapsed in early August. For more information on green building, visit Earth 911′s Green Building page.
