SurfAid Launches Earthquake Appeal for Mentawai Islanders

SurfAid International is promoting a new campaign to help the 70,000 displaced villagers from last week’s earthquakes in Indonesia.

The two earthquakes measured 8.4 and 7.9 and ended up damaging everything from houses to schools to churches. SurfAid had staff on the ground during the quakes, and estimates that 80 percent of the houses were damaged.

SurfAid undertook a similar response effort after the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean, which helped more than 35,000 people. Surfaid’s mission is to improve the health of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing.
