Program Pays People to Recycle

The Cherry Hill Courier-Post reports on the township’s new program to pay residents in coupons for participating in curbside recycling programs.

Households will get a 96-gallon bin for all of their recyclables, and when it is picked up the bin will be weighed to see how many “reward dollars” are earned. Each can has a specific bar code so homes can be tracked, and coupons are downloaded online based on the bar code.

The coupons are valid at over 100 Cherry Hill area stores. The goal of the program is for Cherry Hill to repeat last year’s victory as the number one recycler in Camden County, which netted $25,000 for the township.

The program is a part of Philadelphia-based RecycleBank, which tracks recycling participation with bar codes and scales to know which households recycle what. RecycleBank’s plan is to take the project national, but currently it is available in about 50,000 households.
