Push for More Recycling May Mean Rubbish Collection Fee
Scotsman.com News covers the state of recycling in Scotland, where although recycling is up in the past five years, the country is still well short of its goal for 2013 of only 800,000 tonnes of biodegradable waste sent to landfill.
Scotland has seen the percentage of goods recycled from seven to 25 percent in just five years, but the country is still sending over 1.5 million tonnes of waste to landfills. Because Scotland continues to increase its waste consumption each year, there is talk of charging consumers for waste removal.
If the country is unable to meet its 2013 goal, the UK government would face fines up to £180 million a year. Scotland currently has a recycling participation rate of 81 percent.
