Recycling Plan has Promise

The Olympian runs an op-ed piece on a new request by Harold LeMay Enterprises Inc. to charge a service fee of less than $5.00 per resident per month for a semi-weekly recycling program reaching 600 housing complexes in Thurston County.
The Utilities and Transportation Commission is currently deliberating on this fee, which would start at $4.32 but eventually be dropped to $3.02 for participants through a credit for the sale of recycled materials. The program will be patterned after the county’s residential curbside collection program, which went into effect in spring 2007 and resulted in a 40 percent increase in recycling.
The author is encouraging the passage of the fee as well as participation by the residents in order to reduce the monthly charge for solid waste collection. The article does not specify when this program would be implemented.
