Colleges will play a huge role in our future energy endeavors as a country. It's very important that our universities contine to train students for a greener future

Solar energy is a great opportunity to save big money on electricity. Therefore building your own solar panel should be the best chance to save even greater. Now, I know this may sound complicated, but it IS if you search for info on your own. Instead visit diy home solar panels to get step by step instructions to pull this project in no time!

This really helps with my project. Thank you so much. I was wondering, I once read something about a harmful chemical that is produced while making Solar panels. Could you explain that?
Thank you,
Alison

Let me address each of these cons:

Cost: With new loan programs offered by Sun Run and others, homeowners avoid the up front cost and can actually save money the very first month with their solar system.

Climate Variability: It's more about daylight hours than weather. Lots of solar radiation gets through clouds. Solar works in Northern states also. Germany is the most solar country in the world and the entire country lies further north than the lower 48 states.

Aesthetics: Solar tiles exist. Also, I think solar panels look nicer than a large coal power plant.

Not 24 hours: You don't have to store any power at all if you get a grid-tied system, like the vast majority of people do.

Also, here are some more Pros: http://community.pvpower.com/profiles/blogs/some-benefits-of-going-solar?xg_source=activity

There are no cons to solar panels only pros. There are, however, two inherent disadvantages that apply indirectly to solar panels: bad weather and the day and night cycle.

Not nice to look at? What are you talking about? Solar panels are beautiful. We need to start changing our way of thinking about these kinds of things, since they are the wave of the future! Thinking that something isn't nice to look at just because it looks different than what we are used to is just downright silly. I've even talked to people that think that solar panels are a new kind of status symbol. Well, I guess that's ok if that's what they need to start the new trend to using alternative energy. Whatever it takes - we need to start using alternative energy if we are going to save ourselves from being the oil gluttons that our nation has become! The more we use them, the cheaper they will become, and the more available they will become to the masses! I think that every single new construction should include solar panels, for hot water at the very least! Let's change our 'old' ways of thinking that got us into this mess to start with. We now have the technology to change all of that!

I agree that pollution comes from panel production and it's not mentioned much, but rarely is the pollution from mining/drilling/transporting for coal/oil/gas (and much less for mining and processing uranium for nuclear power) mentioned.

One thing I rarely hear about is solar thermal - mostly NOT an individual homeowner's solution except for solar hot water heaters - and the absolute fact that the U.S. could produce all of it's electricity on 100 square miles of abandoned agricultural land in the desert southwest. An interview with a couple of solar thermal company executives AND a Bush DOE administration official brought this fact to light. The DOE official actually admitted that it could be done for much less than nuclear after economies of scale kick in (currently it's about the same cost per kilowatt). Of course, distribution could be the issue, but that could be rather easily solved by updating our already decrepit electricity grid.

The interview was on NPR (I think it was Science Friday). I hope that this is food for thought for someone and that nuclear should never be the solution - especially in the sunny U.S.

Food for thought.

There are many more pros to solar than cons. Often times the cons need further explanation. And often times, explanation needs even further explanation. As the author wrote, one of the cons is the cost. The simple answer to that is there is financing and lease options available. But theres more... In order to qualify for the solar or leasing options in most cases, you must be able to afford it. A loan company will not loan the household or business money unless they are liquid. So if you have limited funds, solar may not be a great option as of yet. But if you have cash available and would like to hold on to it via a financing program, solar could be a cost effective option. It will get less expensive as times goes on... I assure you.
