Christmas Tree Growers Introduce Green Standards

Environmental Leader features news that the Environmentally Conscious Growers, a group of Christmas tree growers out of Oregon, has developed a standard for identifying the trees that are the greenest in more ways than one.

Qualifying trees under the new system will feature a tag to indicate they were farmed using the coalition’s standards. In the first year the standards have been announced to the public, over 200,000 trees have already qualified.

The trees do not need to be organically grown, but will factor in things like water and soil conservation, worker safety and the use of pesticides. The coalition is trying to roll out the system nationally, but it currently covers Oregon, the top Christmas tree producer in the country.
