Former Midnight Oil Rocker Named Australia’s Environment Minister

The Canadian Press reports that Peter Garrett of the disbanded Australian rock group Midnight Oil has been named the country’s new Environment Minister.

Garrett is a longtime environmental campaigner and has previously headed the Australian Conservation Foundation in addition to his board membership with Greenpeace.

Garrett was appointed to the position by new Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd. The irony is that Garrett was actually a spokesman for several environmental issues during the campaign for Rudd’s opposition.
