Cutlery Made of Potato Starch

Vegware, a company in the United Kingdom now sells knives and forks made of starch and fiber.

If you have ever eaten in a restaurant, especially a fast food restaurant, you know that tons of plastic utensils are discarded every day. These plastics are slow to degrade, if they degrade at all, and fill our landfills. Vegware wants to provide a sustainable alternative for the food services industry.

Here’s a list of their products:

  • Knives, forks and spoons made from corn and potato starch
  • Recyled fiber napkins
  • Plates, bowls and cups made from cassava starch
  • Clear cups, containers and lids made from corn starch
  • Sandwich wedges made from recycled card with a corn starch window

Most of the company’s products, when discarded, are compostable.

The company also looks to be operating under sustainable business practices, too: “bespoke” packaging, no paper catalog and email as a primary form of communication.

It looks like these are not available as consumer products (yet), but perhaps we will find them in our fast food restaurants. Tell your friends.
