NYC Sends a Clear Warning to Recycle-Rule Scofflaws
The New York Post features news that New York City residents are facing the possibility of placing all trash in plastic bags as a way of identifying recyclables and to encourage participation in recycling programs.
New Yorkers currently separate 17 percent of the trash for recycling, with the city’s goal being 25 percent. Buildings have been receiving warnings and summonses for the lack of recycling, and now building owners are being threatened with fines unless trash isn’t placed in clear bags and inspected by building supers.
Starting yesterday, six buildings in Brooklyn had the plastic bag trash rule enforced. The pilot program might be expanded to the entire city starting in 2008.
